Rubin’s Opening Act — Moving Objects First Look
Actively engage your students in exploring the First Look moving object products. The moving dots in these products represent only natural Solar System objects. Satellites, which would move much more quickly through the area, have been removed. Use the Moving Objects First Look Teacher Guide to bring the dynamic solar system into your classroom!
There are three moving object products to explore:
The video: Rubin’s Opening Act — a Swarm of New Asteroids

Rubin’s Opening Act — a Swarm of New Asteroids
In the activity, students use Rubin's Opening Act - a Swarm of New Asteroids, to learn how Rubin Observatory detects moving objects–like asteroids and trans-neptunian objects–over just seven nights!
The Orbit Viewer Spatial Visualization Tool
The Orbit Viewer provides students with an interactive tool to visualize data like object types, motions, and distribution across the solar system. Coming Soon!
Skyviewer with Asteroid Tracks
Turn on asteroid tracks in Skyviewer and uncover their journeys. Multicolored streaks appear–showing where an asteroid has moved over several days through different filters.
Open the Cosmic Treasure Chest image in the Skyviewer App (lower left icon), then turn on asteroid tracks from the Main Menu (upper left corner).
